Tierhoek

The 60yr+ old Grenache is from a single block that is on well drained, decomposed sandstone.  The vines are all bush-vine and unirrigated.  All farming is done organically.  Yields are 3-4 tonne per hectare.

De wijn

This variety is truly Mediterranean and perfect for our climate.  The grapes are picked when the tannins are ripe, and then fermented at a cool temperature.  Maceration was extended to 1 week after the end of fermentation, and then pressed and racked to old French oak barrels.  The wine was bottled after 12 months barrel maturation.

Platter’s Guide 2019: Tierhoek, in the remote, high-lying and wild beauty of Piekenierskloof, is one of the oldest surviving farms on the West Coast Sandveld (the distinguishing soil and vegetation of the area). It was established in 1886 but was run down, the buildings derelict, when Shelley and the late Tony Sandell bought it in 2001. There were some fine old vineyards – still supplying grenache and chenin for the top wines – and others were planted. Wines are made as naturally as possible: no pesticides or herbicides in the vineyards, spontaneous fermentation, the aim always being freshness.
